How long is a DWI on a background check for employment?

How long will a DWI be a background check for employment? I heard 3 years is that true? Don't criticize about DWI's. If you drink, you have probably driven over the limit 0.08% at least once in your life. We all know what can happen, stick to the question.

How long is a DWI on a background check for employment?
I thought like 10 years...

or maybe I'm just thinking of the twice in 10 years thing..

but I really thought it stayed on there for 10 years.
Reply:I can honestly say, I don't have to worry about getting a DWI, but I do know that most employers require that information from all applicants, especially if the applicant is applying for a driving position. A DWI stays on your driving record as long as you hold a valid driving license, and any DWI you get in any state will be counted against you. If you have a CDL, I know in Florida, 2 strikes against you and you loose your CDL for life and if 3 DWI charges, you could possibly kiss your regular driving license goodby for almost life as well.

An employer looks at the background of an applicant very closely, especially if there is drinking/violence or any criminal history involved. It is best to be honest on your applications and resumes to the best of your knowledge. The background check tells the employer a lot about you, your habits and character, and if you have a good history with only 1 DWI against you, chances are that the employer will just set that charge aside until he/she interviews you for the position you're applying for, then ask about a posible drinking problem. I have filled out quite a few applications and put no to those questions and at most of my interviews the questions would still be asked; "Are you sure you have answered these questions truthfully?".If the employer hires you and then later find that you with-held that information, that is grounds for immediate termination.

A 3 year length for a background check is definitely false. The best advice that most people would tell you is, don't drink and drive. If you want to drink when you go out partying, arrange to have a designated driver, that way you not only protect your license, but you also protect your life and others as well not losing your job or having to be concerned about a background check because of a DWI charge. Be honest about yourself, value your life(you only have one) and good luck on your application. I hope you do well.
Reply:Honestly there is no time limit that can be defined as to how long DWI check would be done. As you have noticed there are certain companies whose employment form simply ask if you have ever been convicted, without specifying any time limit. Just like visa forms to most countries. I would say don't hide if you have ever been charged with DWI, hiding facts can result in bad consequences, whereas telling the truth from the beginning would not hurt for long.
