How did At-Will Employment weaken protections of the US worker?

I was told that I became into practice to be able to fire people in a union such as the United Auto Workers, which is currently the most powerful union, and easier to terminate employment of non-union employees and managers. Also At-Will Employment allegedly supports the owners and investors.

How did At-Will Employment weaken protections of the US worker?
The Democrats and Republicans benefit from it.
Reply:To weaken the union especially the United Auto Workers. Unemployment used to be 2 years but lazy people messed it up for those that are honest. It became more powerful in the 1990s especially in California.

Is there a web site or some quick way to look up old employment dates?

I cant get a hold of an old company that I used to work for. I am trying to get the exact dates of employment quickly. I looked up my credit report and it shows nothing like that.

Is there a web site or some quick way to look up old employment dates?
You might try contacting the social security administration, or the IRS, I would think they would help with this info since we pay them to stick it to us ;)
Reply:No there is no such website where anyone can login and get their personal employment history. You will either have to get hold of your previous employers, dig through your files, or put some random months when you think you worked for the company

How far back should I list previous employment on a resume?

I am starting a job search after being employed in my degree field for 5 years. My current job is the first job I have held in my degree field, but I was employed at 3 previous companies while in high school and college. My first job was 13 years ago. So how far back should I list my previous employment? I'm not sure if anyone at my first job would even remember me if contacted (I don't think most people I worked under are even employed there anymore). Thanks everyone, the more advice the better! :)

How far back should I list previous employment on a resume?
Often it is suggested to list 10 years of employment or the past three positions. If you have long term employment with your past employers, even though they are 10 yers old, list them. Employers love long term employees at an interview, so you will be fine to list prior positions.

Also, if your prior jobs evn remotely involved supervision, related work, or team work, list them.
Reply:Ten years is correct. Be sure to do a little research beforehand so you can go in and say "Maria Smith was my supervisor in 1999, but she is no longer there. However, Marvin Harris is in charge of the department now, and he was one of my co-workers." or "Maria Smith is no longer there, but the CEO is still Mark Harris and he knows me."

First job at 16, how do I fill out the employment record in the application?

Okay. the application says to list down 4 employment records. I only have 1 employment record. What should I write on the other ones? Volunteering experiences or just write N/A?

First job at 16, how do I fill out the employment record in the application?
If you did some volunteer work that is worth mentioning, use it. Otherwise, just leave it blank.

Given your age, they won't expect you to have a full employment history.

Good luck.
Reply:Indicate on the application that you are a student but in the employment record section only list the one job you have had. It's all right not to have 4 employment records.
Reply:Write ONLY the employment records you have been paid for. Like you said you only had the 1. Write nothing in the other areas unless you had a part-time job, a temporary job, or contract job for which you got paid wages.

Keep the volunteer work, etc. for a place at the end of the application where it say.... anything else you would like to say about your qualifications or experience relative to the job you are applying for.

It is OK since you are only 16 to have few prior jobs. Don't worry. Better to be HONEST and ACCURATE than overstate or fudge that kind of stuff on an application.

The employer will check it out.
Reply:Put self-employed entrepreneur for the remaining three.

Why do I have to pay self-employment taxes when my taxable income is 0?

My adjusted gross income is about $6000. With the standard deductions, my taxable income is zero. Turbo Tax says I owe over $1500 in taxes. If this were W-2 income and not self-employment wages (1099), I wouldn't owe any taxes for this year so why do I still have to pay so much?

Why do I have to pay self-employment taxes when my taxable income is 0?
You have to report self-employment tax if your adjusted gross income is $400 or over. If you were self-employed, and your net profit was 6000, you would owe c. 600 for regular Federal income tax and $847.77 for Self- employment, which is nothing but social insecurity tax. You will receive a credit for one-half of that on the front of your IRS Form 1040.

The reason the tax seems so high is probably because you did not send in estimated tax. Be sure to send in 100% of your 2007 income tax liability or 90% of your estimated 2008 income tax liability, spread over 4 quarters.

Begin saving all your receipts and keep records of all of your business related expenses if you have not done so already. You will have to go over your canceled checks and all you did last year to come with deductions that will knock down your income tax liability.

Reply:I would check that you put 6,000 and not 60,000.

Or perhaps thats you tax payable before tax credits.
Reply:Not true - if it were W-2 income you would have ALREADY paid the social security and medicare - half of it would have been taken out of your paychecks (and you wouldn't get it refunded) and the other half would have been paid by your employer. Social security and medicare are charged on ALL of your income, not just the taxable income.
Reply:SE tax is based on net self-employment income.

The fact that your AGI and taxable income is lower is of no consequence.
Reply:I'm assuming your were an independent contractor of some sort receiving a 1099. There were no taxes taken out of your checks, so you need to pay at the end of the year.

If you had been an employee and rec'd a W-2 you wouldn't have had as much in your paycheck because the company would have taken out taxes. And you probably wouldn't owe.

I am an independent consultant with The Pampered Chef and I get a 1099 every year. You have to remember to set aside money from your checks to pay for the taxes at the end.

If you need more help, email me at chefkathy08@yahoo.com.
Reply:This tax is 15.3% of net business income and represents social security and medicare payments, not income tax. When you work for someone you pay 7.65% out of your check and your employer matches that. When you are a contractor/1099 worker no one is paying that amount weekly. The only way that number will go to zero is if you have no business profit or a business loss. Make sure you have taken all the allowable deductions against that 1099 income on your Schedule C so the self-employment tax is as low as it can be.

Can I buy a home without employment history?

Im a young aspiring first time home buyer- I have good credit and a couple of roommates in place but do not necessarily have a stable employment history, but could come up with the funds to make the necessary monthly payments. Is it still possible for a first time home buyer to purchase a home without having the recommended 2 yrs of job history?

Can I buy a home without employment history?
Yeap...ask to go "stated"
Reply:I think you should rent for 2 years and then you'll have a 2 year job history as well as rental history! Go to a local bank who offers home loans and get a FREE pre-approval! Then you'll know for sure.
Reply:yes you could, but boy does this sound like a bad idea. Sounds like a good way to ruin your credit thats all
Reply:Ask! If you get turned down, ask to speak with higher up keep going until you reach a person who can lend the money without following the established guide lines. Convince that person of your ability to meet payments.
Reply:Stated is the way to go..also make sure go with a mortgage broker since banks directly probably wont lend you.
Reply:Yes it is possible. Check with a lender to see if the "stated income" loan programs will fit your needs. Real Estate is a good investment, especially if it's going to be your primary residence.

Good Luck!
Reply:Yeah, but the interest rate would kill you.
Reply:Thoeretically, yes, if the person's bank account is big enough.

What is the entry path to employment within the poilce Bomb squad?

Are there formal requirements?

Is it only possible if you're already an officer?

What would be a good way for someone who is interested to go about gaining employment within a bomb squad?

Thanks in advance

What is the entry path to employment within the poilce Bomb squad?
I know that a most require psych tests and a lie detector test as part of being employed with the department. One thing that is good is education, such as criminal justice, police science, etc. that is always helpful. You must first gain employment with the police department, and then go through their academy and graduate. Then possibly in time you would be able to maneuver to a position such as working with the Bomb Squad, given some time with in the department.

I would suggest that you call your nearest police department and speak with the HR department, they should be able to give you a plethora of information about all that it entails.

Best of luck to you.
Reply:I know of about half a dozen agencies that have a bomb squad and all of them you have to be a police officer there first.
Reply:A lot of them are former EOD guys out of the military
Reply:Being in the Army Corps helps, but you do need to be an officer first. Depending on city or state your referring to, it could be as little as 6 months on the job, or like here in Chicago, 5+ years before you transfer over. Im sure you didnt get into the CoE without doing basic training or other work before doing this right? Same principle here. Work before advancement.

You dont get to be captain your second day on the job.
Reply:These guys got their experience for the military as ORDINANCE DISPOSAL technicians.
Reply:Like any specialized units within a police department, you have to be a sworn officer first and spend your time on patrol. The fact that you have military experience on EOD might help you in the long run, but you still have to fight your way up through the ranks. Most states don't recognize military certifications.
Reply:i would guess you would have to be apolice officer for a certain number of years before you can request a specialty program such as the "bomb squad" Do you think detectives become a detective right away of course not they started out as a rookie cop first.

Good Luck!!!
Reply:Lots of getting in good with the higher-ups. You have to be chosen. It's as much politcal as it is merit-based.
Reply:Usually you have to get hired on as an officer somewhere with a bomb squad. Like any specialized unit you have to do your time in patrol and then put in for the Bomb Squad. They have a process for picking newbies. If you get picked you have to go off to school for a long time.

Old Joke: If you see the bomb squad running try to keep up with them.

What is the reason for your employment today?

Do you hold your current employment because of the money you generate or is it the strong relationship you have with co-workers or boss?

What is the reason for your employment today?
Both but everyone needs money to survive. That the shameful truth.
Reply:It's a little of both for me. I get paid well and I really like my co-workers, my boss and the environment we create here. I've been here for over 4 years now because of that.
Reply:To eat and pay bill and my rent.....Which prisoners do not do for them selves,
Reply:Neither. I work for something to do. Im a full time mum. But once my kids are in bed I work, I work a few a hours a week to get me out the house and to be me, Not the "wife" or the "mother" but me! I have worked there over five year. and I love it I earn peanuts but they are my peanut!
Reply:I have my current job because I love what I do. I work as a paraprofessional at a high school. I love helping teens with schoolwork or whatever else is bothering them. So I guess it's the relationships, but I would not say my coworkers are that great, nor my boss. It's the kids.
Reply:the money and the relationships..

one gets a job for the money, the relationships is the bonus that can keep you or push you away
Reply:Nope your wrong. I'm Selfemployed and like to work long hours with small pay and no future.... Ye Haw...
Reply:Since I'm now retired after a serious accident on the job, I can't answer your question currently, but I can say that at my last job, at a large railroad, I worked to move as many trains as quickly as I could through our yard, realizing that if they don't make money, I don't make money. I can't say I was always that cognizant of "the bigger picture", and so, often, I was the proverbial clock watcher, sad to say. I'm afraid the majority, the overwhelming majority, of workers here in the U.S., and I'm sure elsewhere as well, are more the clock watcher types than the asset to their employer. I wish it were otherwise, but, . . .. God Bless you.
Reply:I am currently working in a Travel and Tourism job and I absolutley love it not for the money but the people that i work with are just so much fun!
Reply:Neither. In a technical matter, I'm unemployed. But in that same technical matter, I am employed.

You see, I'm a writer, and so as long I keep writing, I'm always gonna be employed. However, I'm not exactly making any money from my current 'job'... I've been published, don't get me wrong. But publication is only part of it.

I can't really work, I can't get a real job the pays money, because I'm too young where I currently live. In due time though I'll be able to get a paying job. But it'll still be a matter of getting the job.

I do know people that work because that like what they do, I know people that work for the money because they nee it, I know people that work for the money, love what they do and have good relationships with co-workers and sometimes bosses. But I'm not 1 of those people. Sorry!
Reply:Both, I generate a lot of money as an engineer programmer. Plus I have a strong relationship with the owners/bosses. I get along pretty good with the co-workers also.
Reply:Because, I need to live. Pay bills ect.

Is it standard practice to check reference after beginning employment rather than prior to?

In my experience, employers typically do background verification and check references prior to confirming the offer. But the recent offer states that they will do a criminal background check and verify references after I start employment and that the employment could be terminated if the checks are not satisfactory. The offer is from a financial company and this would be my first job in financial sector. Is this a standard practice? What do you think?

Is it standard practice to check reference after beginning employment rather than prior to?
Actually, you are not the first I have heard of. I think because it takes a long time to do some of the verifications they need. Criminal, education, salary history by checking your taxes, credit checks, and actual personal interviews.

One lady was let go...simply because she inflated her salary. This happened 7 mos after her hiring.
Reply:They can check either before or after, and they will check if they say so.

You may wish to check out a company called LTS, they offer very valuable advice for someone like yourself. They are located at www.learntosucceed.biz . Good luck.

Am I allowed to verify previous employment without an applicant's signed consent?

I have a pool of 10 potential candidates for a position as a truck driver within my company. We have a standard form that we send to applicant's previous employers to verify previous employment history. I was wondering if we are allowed to request this information from previous employers without the applicant's signed consent? I do not want to violate any privacy laws.

Am I allowed to verify previous employment without an applicant's signed consent?
You can ask. The dates someone worked somewhere are not private. Even if they were private, the privacy right was waived when they told you who they worked for and when. Likewise, everyone who says you can only ask dates of employment and everything else is illegal is wrong. You can ask anything but the former employer will usually only provide basic information because they don't want to be sued for defamation or intentional interference with a business relationship.

Lastly, you should still get them to sign the authorization form just because people are litigious and could file a meritless lawsuit. It still costs money to defend even though you would win.
Reply:No...be on the safe side and GET their consent
Reply:It depends on how your application is worded. If where they sign the application at the end states that you have the right to verify the content of the application then yes, that covers the consent to verify employment. Otherwise, no.
Reply:It depends on the state's laws. At least here in california, all a previous employer can provide is proof the applicant was employed, title, and starting/ending salary.

The way you can see if an applicant is a good one would be to ask if they'd hire the person again.

Anything more specific, and it's likely illegal.
Reply:Nope, you cannot (it may be different from state to state however). If they don't consent, you do not have to hire them.

You also have to be careful about what questions you ask the former employers and how it should influence you in hiring them.
Reply:Hi..take a look at this link, i think you'll find it helpful not only in this particular question, but for many more. http://employeeissues.com/background_che...
Reply:No you can't.

You have to either contact the applicant and have them sign and return a faxed copy of the waiver, or process their application without it on the assumption that they have no work history with that employer (pending verification).
Reply:Yes, you have to have the applicant's permission before you do anything like that.
Reply:Yes, you can ask. Some former employers won't answer your questions without a signed form, and some will only verify dates of hire, etc.

I check on these types of things all the time and only on rare occasions will an employer ask if I have a signed consent form.

Go for it!
Reply:no you cannot however usually there are conditions where if you dont sign you cant get the job
Reply:I don't think you can, every application I have every filled out I had to say it was Ok to check with the former employers
Reply:You can "ask" anything without violating privacy laws. However, you can only answer questions about 1)Position or Title. 2) Date of hire. 3) Last day worked.
Reply:should
Reply:i have no clue
Reply:no you are not allowed to, there is a form that we as potential candidates sign, working in hr you should know that, because you could get a lawsuit against you
Reply:NO WAY
Reply:I would ask in a more official place rather than y|a.

How do I explain my one-year gap of employment on my resume?

As a single mother, I was lucky to live off my savings, 401K and tax-return. I have been looking for a job for the past-month and have had only one inteview. Is it because of my one year gap of employment? I was even told not to mention having a baby, because that is more of a risk of not gaining employment. What do I do?

How do I explain my one-year gap of employment on my resume?
You don't say how you are explaining the gap right now. That maybe the reason why you're not getting interviews; or it could be something completely different, like you don't have the right skills needed for the jobs, you maybe over-qualified or under-qualified. Have you called the HR dept and talked to them about reasons why you were passed over? If you know it's because of the 1-year gap, I'd be honest with the reason why. It might be an obstacle to hurdle, but if you sell yourself with confidence and can back up your claims of skill %26amp; knowledge with solid examples, you'll overcome that obstacle. It might take longer than a month of job-hunting, but if you're persistent, you'll get past it.
Reply:You don't want an employer who doesn't understand you are a mother first. For nine years, I was a single mother of 2 children, and I was also a very dependable employee. Honesty is always the best policy. You don't want them finding out the truth from someone other than you. A child is not something to be ashamed of, but someone you can be proud of.
Reply:While there is a lot of competition for jobs, I would not lie about it or fudge the dates. If the prospective employer realizes you've lied on your resume by checking dates and/or references, it might make them wonder what else you are/will lie about. Tell them that you were a hard-working determined woman who wants to provide the best that you can for your child and would love to let {employer's name} help you do that.

I've just come from maternity leave myself and stated that while I was off for a year, I was able to keep up to date with my skills, and even developed new ones or helped refine them - Better time management (getting laundry done, cleaning house, breastfeeding baby, getting precious sleep! etc ) better organizational skills (keeping track of blankets, diapers, pacifiers, keys, purse etc) better able to deal with stress (crying sick infant at 3 am when you've yet to be asleep, awake since 7 the previous morning type of stress), These are the types of skills most employers are wanting to see developed.

It helps if you can show that you kept up on developments in the field of work as well (shows that you are interested in working as well as parenting)

Be up front with them and make sure you mention that primary child care is in place if arranged, and you have backup just in case primary fails. Be prepared for questions and most of all be proud of yourself, going it alone is not easy. Good luck!!
Reply:I personaly feel that the truth is always better as it will catch up with you sooner or later !
Reply:Your choices are: explain it or fudge the date of your previous employer. I would not mention the baby either. There is a lot of competition for jobs out there, it's probably not your gap.
Reply:i always put that "during this period of time i was a full time parent" it is completey understandable having a year off with your just born child. of course you should mention it!
Reply:be honest when your interviewer ask for it %26amp; state why you are ready to return to work--are child care arrangements in place to allow you to return to work?
Reply:Be honest. You can say that you decided to leave employment to have a baby and give it a good head start in life, and now that they baby situation is settled you are ready to become gainfully employed again.

If you just leave a gap in your resume, an interviewer will ask you about it, and you have to be truthful. But a gap without any explanaiton could look as if you have something to hide, such as a jail term. That may result in lack of interviews. Better to explain the gap and get interviews from businesses that understand that women have babies but also have skills to offer.
Reply:I generally don't put dates on my resume. as long as you have experience in the field that you are applying for, you should be able to find something. Have you considered revamping your resume? Maybe it doesn't have a WOW factor to it, and if it doesn't, they normally don't get as close of a look by the people doing the hiring. (FYI, they usually only spend about 15 seconds on each resume, so if you can't catch their eyes, you won't get a call)

A lot of single mother's take time off to spend time with their children, so you have nothing to hide.

An emplyer can't refuse to hire you because you have a child...that's illegal.
Reply:I totally agree with sara c and ronin. You cannot fault anyone for becoming a parent, especially from mom's end.
Reply:Always be honest.

How to find out whether an employment lawyer is really a good one or not?

I am thinking to have consultation(s) with some employment lawyer(s). I deeply wonder how to find out how capable a lawyer is. I assume everyone would say himself or herself is of great ability, especially when they want to take the case. So I would want some different sources to see a lawyer's capability, preferably even before I have the consultation for which most if not all charge fees. The consultation fee is not the problem, but finding out he or she is much incapable after spending the money is not that good of an option.

If any person who is either experienced or of legal training background, please provide your expertise suggestion.

Thank you very much for the advices.

How to find out whether an employment lawyer is really a good one or not?
Sorry a good lawyer may not have many wins, he or she may have many successful negotiated settlements which provide the client with the money they wanted without the expense of going into a trial. Not every attorney is listed on Lexis/Nexis only those who purchase books/software from that company.

I am an employment lawyer, successful, multiple wins, with a history of fair negotiations. I do not accept clients who are arrogant, who think they are Perry Mason, or who do not have a legitimate case. I speak to many potential clients but only accept about 20% as clients.

The way I find out about the client is to speak with them, that is probably the way you need to find out about the attorney. Explain your case to the attorney and ask them how they would handle it.
Reply:Do a LexisNexis search on his name. A good experienced lawyer will have many winning cases.

What does the law say about employment history checks?

Can my former employer disclose why I left my job or can they only disclose start and end dates? I also omitted 2 former employers from my resume because I was only there for less than a month. Can new employers somehow find about these former employers if I omit them from my resume? If so, how? Through public records? My social security number? Do new employers have to inform me in writing if they will be doing an employment history check?

What does the law say about employment history checks?

Yes unfortunatly they can, and one place I am applying for now uses theworknumber.com and they show your past ten years of employment history, and there are MANY agencies that do the same thing as well.
Reply:They do have to let you know if they will be doing one, but they probably DID let you know, when you gave them the information that you gave them. Your former employer can disclose what they want, but most corporations have policies of just confirming dates and whether or not you left voluntarily, because they fear lawsuits. An employment agency or any background checking specialist will nonetheless usually get to ask some more probing questions- this is why they ask for your supervisor's contact info rather than the company's HR department number. Your supervisor will probably not answer too many questions, but they will ask, "If you had your own [lawn-mowing or whatever] company, would you hire [Joe]?" If your old boss says no, you are screwed. If you are concerned that you will get negative references, get your nerves together and contact your old supervisor, explain that you are having trouble with your job search, and that you need their help. If they fired you, they probably feel bad and want you to be employed, just so they don't have the guilt, so apologize sincerely for whatever you did, and ask if they will say that you resigned, or that you were laid off in a non-punitive manner. I do not THINK they could find out about jobs you do not tell them about. If you are applying for a high-level position or a position which requires a security clearance, different rules apply, of course, but if not I doubt they would pay for that level of background check. What they will do is ask you about the suspicious gaps in your resume, and you will have to explain what you were doing. If you lie, and they EVER catch you in it, you are in big trouble. Put as positive a spin on it as you can, but never, ever, lie to a prospective employer.
Reply:They can disclose anything that is factual, but usually only disclose start and end dates because most HR people don't want to risk saying anything else.

There's no way for them to trace those other 2 employers unless they find out from a third person. (I found out that some one had omitted 2 jobs when a friend of hers who worked at my company let it slip).

They don't have to notify you in writing they are doing an employment history check. But, the only way it can be done is by you giving them the names and addresses of your prior employers. They don't have access to some Top Secret database (like the IRS) to uncover all this stuff. So, no worries there.

The only thing they need your approval for (and can get in depth information on) is for criminal background checks and credit checks. Neither of those touch on prior employers.

Can you provide me a good appeal letter sample for termination of employment?
"Dear Sir/Madam

I (State your name and Company ID number or your SS number) wish to appeal your decision for termination for the following reasons:..

At this point you will have to dispute their reason(s) and, probably have to state that, whatever happened, won't happen again. List each numerically--preferably if your letter of termination states the reasons numerically such as "1)"

I would also list any good references you have. Did you have a person in management who liked you? See if you can get a letter of recommendation from him/her. Also list good points of how you contributed to employment at the company such as x days of good attendance or x days you were on time. I would state how much you loved (not liked--loved) your job.Do you have a family to support? Mention that too.

Last sentence should read: "I thank you for taking your valuable time reading this and beg for reconsideration."

What is a full service employment agency?

I was looking online through job postings, and came across a company that said they were a full service employment agency. What exactly does that mean? Do companies hire them to find the right canidates?

What is a full service employment agency?
Depends- they might be full service to *you* and charge *you* for finding a job. i've seen it before. if theyre full service to an employer, they advertise, recruit, interview, etc.

Where can i find consulate employment in the chicago area?

i am currently working as a chaffeur to a consul in manhattan ny, and would like to transfer to chicago.. where can i find information about employment on the different consulates here in chicago?

Where can i find consulate employment in the chicago area?
if you are a chauffeur you should have access to all consulate job offers, within your office, ask someone in your surrounding, it will be faster, which country are you working for?
Reply:Search for countries with consulates in Chicago and apply thereat if you want to transfer from New York.
Reply:Thats a good question. Hopefully someone that works for one of the Chicago consulates.

All I can offer you is this link for the consulates in the Chicago area. http://local.yahoo.com/IL/Chicago/Govern...

I know that there was a chauffeur vacancy at the US Consulate in September but it was filled quite quickly.

Sorry I can't do more. Good luck with it.

I would say that your best bets are Las Vegas, always something going on new there and New Orleans with all the construction still happening there. You didn't say what type of work but that would be my two best suggestions.

Remember that Morgan guy from the 30 days show? He did that McDonald's thing. Ne way...he did temporary employment on one of his shows in Cincinnati and said it was the easiest place to get them.
Reply:u should look into agencies that work throughout us.. or differ countries...best city is really where u feel like going and what you want to see...people who u will be good around.. and expenses for living.. If i had an opt right now I think I would go to North Carolina.. i heard is reallly nice and preety.. the scenery.. the people.. so its totally up to u and the experience u want to take out of it..=) good luck whereever u go.
Reply:Take it from a temp, temp employment sucks. Most places you have to work a year before you get any benefits like vacation, sick days and what not; and most places treat temps like dirt. You can be a temp anywhere though, to answer your question, there is no "best place" for it.

How do I handle this employment gap in my resume?

I have a 1 1/2 year employment gap since my last job. I have read different suggestions for handling a gap, including putting it on the resume, in the cover letter, or just wait to explain it in an interview.

I took time off for educational reasons completely unrelated to the type of job I'm seeking. My work background is in customer service, so I'm looking for a customer service job to pay the bills. I left my last job in Oct 2005 for educational reasons--I took time off to take music lessons so I can be qualified to go to college for music after my husband gets done w/ law school. Obviously these skills have nothing to do w/ customer service so I'm reluctant to explain it in my resume. Should I put it in the cover letter or is it just so irrelevant that I should just wait to explain it in an interview (which I may not get)?

There's also the suggestion to change the resume to a functional format, but I also read that some employers don't like that format at all.

How do I handle this employment gap in my resume?
Be honest on your resume. It will look good to employers that you took time off to devote full-time to education. It shows commitment. You don't have to say exactly which courses you took. If you're asked in an interview, tell the truth. All educational courses are relevant to your current job search. They teach you more than subject matter; to organize, study, and plan your time. This is a great asset in customer service. You're right about the functional format, employers prefer a more detailed resume.
Reply:Resumes have two headings: "Employment History" and "Education." Under education simply list the date, the school and the course(s). Only explain that you took music courses for a while if they ask. Just say that you like music as a hobby if they ask further which I don't think they will.
Reply:I use to be in Human Resources management and this is an easy issue to deal with, put it on your resume, never lie, and when you get the interview simply explain that you took the time off for educational reasons and are completely ready to resume your career and are excited about the opportunity to work for XYZ.........the biggest thing NOT to do is leave it off, b/c that would be falsification of the application and grounds for termination.

Good luck to you, everyone has done something similar in their lives, nothing to be ashamed of, just move forward!

best wishes
Reply:A person who loves music, can be very good at customer service! Don't take your hobby as a liability. Show it to everyone, tell openly that you went ahead for learning music because its more like an added tool in your life. Customer service is frustrating at times, and whenever you feel frustrated...every individual like to take help of music. When you go in bus out of 10 ,6 people are listening music, why? because they're tired and want t relax. Put that in your resume. Also don't forget to mention about studies. Music alone can't be a factor for the gap, so it has to be music and studies. So you were engaged and I personally don't see any gap.

Regarding format, I believe it depends upon job and type of company you're applying to. I applied with a very basic resume and got my job. Make sure the things that you want to explain are visible in your resume. People are confused while preparing a resume, the basic idea is that you're introducing yourself. Even at the interview, its all resume which is discussed!
Reply:You can put the music lessons on your resume and explain that it is of your interest and also for you to take time off to re-think of your career path.

Employers like integrity and your serious consideration to your future career is well appreciated.
Reply:Volunteer work, and looking for employment.
Reply:It shouldnt be a problem. Put it in the educational section of your resume.

It will probably come up in the interview and you have an excellent answer. Employers are looking for well rounded people and any education is a plus. It means that you can converse on many different subjects.

I am a big believer in never lying on your resume. You dont really want to work for someone that doesnt like who you really are.
Reply:As a former employer a gap is not necessarily a bad thing if the time was used constructively.

What I didn't want to hear what that the person was taking a year off to surf in Maui..that kind of employee doesn't sound like they will be a good candidate.

If you were furthering your education..that's a good thing.

I Have Serious Gaps in Employment and I'm on Disability, How do I explain those Gaps to Potential Employers?

I have been on disability for a number of years, but I'm torn between disclosing and lying about the gaps in my employment history. I am hesitant to disclose this information. I have disclosed in the past and I have been rejected from every job I've disclosed to. I believe that is why I'm getting rejected from different opportunities. However, I can't prove that this is occurring. Any factual help would be much appreciated, because I'd like nothing more than to work.

I Have Serious Gaps in Employment and I'm on Disability, How do I explain those Gaps to Potential Employers?
Do not lie about the gaps. If you lie and the employer finds out, your offer will be rescinded. If you have already started work you can be fired. When an employer checks your references, they will ask your references about the gaps.

The best thing to do is to tell the truth in generic terms. If you were injured and unable to work, say so. You do not have to go into great detail.
Reply:To reject you because of a disability is discrimination.

The issue should be whether you can do the job, or not.

If you were in jail for those periods, they may have reasons.

But they are probably looking for reliability/dependability.

Perhaps a letter from a doctor %26amp;/or lawyer would help.
Reply:be honest. If you are on disability the federal government has a ticket to work program and they can assist you. You will need to go to your local department of rehabilatative services office. They have a trial period for you to work and if you can't do it you wont loose your disability and have to go through the whole application process.
Reply:i hear ya...i am in the same boat...i am disabled...haven't worked for 5 yrs...i have a 4 yr degree in business....i was looking for awhile...a staffing place called me and said...would you please update your resume.....i said it is...she said so what have you been doing for the past 5 yrs....it was like a slap in the face....

What is the best thing to do if my previous employer did not want to issue my certification of employment?

Almost one month ago when I requested my Certification to my previous employer. I really needed this because of my pre-employment requirements. I already resigned and properly endorsed my workloads but my boss did not accepted that I had decided to leave her that is why she's holding my certifiation.

What is the best thing to do if my previous employer did not want to issue my certification of employment?
I don't think they do not want to issue your certification of employment; maybe they just want to make it hard for you for some reason.

Actually, you should have made sure you have it with you before you left and before you sign any waiver of accountability on their part. It's too late for that now. The only thing you can do is to make follow-up frequently until they got feed-up!

Or you can talk to your former boss and explain your predicament. I'm sure she don't want to do any harm on your future. Maybe she's waiting for you to do just that.

I wish you goodluck.
Reply:Its not too late!..you have the right to get your certification any time even after you resign

Just make things documented and official.

Request your certification on a letter.

Keep yourself a copy.

Try to give it through your union(If they don't do it for you,at least send it on the registered mail!).

Its important to mention you need it in a very soon reasonable time for next employment you got(so if they tried to make it hard they could be taken to court for damage by intention!)

Don't worry they have to give it to you, just be confident so they know they will get a headache if they don't give it to you

good luck
Reply:write formally requesting for the letter and copy your union if you belong to any union, you should also involved other senior officials of the company to intervene, if all these fail, tell your new employer to request for it on your behalf.

Some businesses demand applicants for employment submit to drug tests. Why would an anal test be required?

How many drug tests at one time should anyone have to take to satisfy any employer's drug free policy for employment. Isn't a blood test, urine test, and hair sample enough to prove your body is drug free? Why would an anal exam be required also? When is enough, enough? Isn't a drug test requirement a violation of our civil rights?

Some businesses demand applicants for employment submit to drug tests. Why would an anal test be required?
A drug test isn't a violation of your civil rights because no one is forcing you to submit to it. If you don't want to submit to the drug test, then don't apply for work at companies that request them.
Reply:Because you are a piece of meat in the big wheel of payroll.
Reply:pne would think..... i'm gonna just guess thats part of a routine physical that needed to be passed for employment that which that aspect your uncomfortable with ...... and not really...... they don't have to hire you........ they can refuse employment to you if you refuse or fail a drug test

How do I know if I am legally eligible for employment in the United States?

First job application, and I am not sure what is required to be legally eligible for employment in the U.S.

How do I know if I am legally eligible for employment in the United States?
Most apps will ask you to provide a SS number, which you should have if you are a citizen, or an alien residence number, which you should have if you got here legally. To answer your question, you just have to be a LEGAL resident of the country or have a work VISA. If you jumped a fence to get here, then you should go back home because breaking the law is wrong!
Reply:Go to the web site http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf it lists the documents necessary to prove authorization to work in the U.S. that you will need to present in order to be hired by an employer. "All employees, citizens andnoncitizens, hired after November 6, 1986, must complete Section 1of this form at the time of hire, which is the actual beginning of employment."

When making estimated tax payments to the IRS, do I need to include an amount to cover self-employment taxes?

I am a self-employed consultant as of this year, so I am responsible for both income and self-employment taxes. If I cover all income taxes due with estimated taxes during the year, but do not include funds to cover SE taxes until I file in 2009, will it appear on my filing next April that I have under-paid, incurring penalties and interest?

When making estimated tax payments to the IRS, do I need to include an amount to cover self-employment taxes?
Your estimated payments are supposed to include all taxes due including Self Employment taxes.

If you don't, you could have penalties for underpayment of estimated tax payments.
Reply:Definately include an amount to cover the SE tax.
Reply:Yes. Self employment taxes are supposed to be included in your quarterly payments.

What type of government employment security clearances can you get when you have a foreign spouse?

I know the CIA is pretty much out of the question but is the NSA out as well? Is it all Top Secret clearances or what? thanks

employment

What type of government employment security clearances can you get when you have a foreign spouse?
It will be difficult and they would have to do a thorough background check on your wife, but it is possible. It also depends on what country she is from, A Mexican or Australian wife is considered less of a risk than a Middle Eastern or Chinese wife.
Reply:that all depends on the spouse and where they are from and how easily they can be checked out themselves.
Reply:In my day, it precluded any SCI or special program access unless the spouse was a national of the UK, Canada or Australia.

How does a pre-employment drug test work?

Say a company did pre-employment drug testing. When would they typically do that, and would they give you a warning or a few days notice before doing it? Just wondering if they'd do it at an interview, or if its something more like, they test you once you are given the job or something?

How does a pre-employment drug test work?
when you interview they will give you a place and phone # to be tested. you call them and make an appt. the employer will probably give you a week to go get it done. thats how it worked for my husband anyway
Reply:When I first got a job at HSBC Bank, I was told at the interview that I would be requested to submit a sample for drug testing. The appointment had to be made within a week at the agency they used for testing. They can't drug test you at an interview - that would be considered random drug testing, and they can only do that if you are employed and it is a condition of your employment.
Reply:Drug testing is now required for Workmans Compensation or the insurance company for self-insured businesses. Where I live in Arkansas, you go through the interview and if they are going to offer you a job, you get the test the same or next day. I have been tested in the employers nurses office immediately. Hair tests can detect drug use for approximately 6 months previous.
Reply:usually they give you like a consent to sign at the interview saying that you are allowing them to drug test you, and then if youre hired you probably get your drug test during like orientation or something. i usually get the consent and sign it, but i havent gotten a job in a while :-(
Reply:Most companies will have you do a drug test when they are seriously considering hiring you, normally as the final step. There's usually no warning and some companies will go so far as a drug test using a hair sample(which will show if there has been drug use months back).
Reply:Jobs will never give you a drug test at the site of the interview. It will be after the interview, if you are hired on the spot they will give you a chain of custody form to take to the drug testing site, they will usually tell you where it is or give you a list of a few places to choose from in your area. They will also tell you how long you have to go take the test, many employers only give you 24 hours. But 24 is still enough time to go get a system cleaner and use it. Some jobs, however, will give you anywhere up to 10 days to go take your test, or won't even give you a deadline for it. You usually only have to take a drug test though unless you are definitely hired by the company.
Reply:Most often, you will go thru the interview. Then if they want to hire you, they would offer you a conditional job offer. The condition would be that you pass the drug screen. They will send you to a clinic to get tested.

I am 37 and have a history of depression and employment problems. How can I get employed. But not fast food?

I have had a history of job jumping. I have never been employed longer than 8 mths. Now I have been out of work for 3 years because of my trying to get well due to my major depression. I have a Vocational rehabilitation counselor and a employment specialist. But no one wants to look any further than my resume. I have experience in material handling(forklift certified). History of shipping/receiving and distribution 5 years worth. I have a family to take care of and I am desperate to fix this. But how and who?

I am 37 and have a history of depression and employment problems. How can I get employed. But not fast food?
Have the Vocational Rehab counselor send you for retraining in a field that most interests you. Then change your resume from chronological order and just say 5 years work history in _____. . .you did not say if the job hopping was due to the depression or if you were fired as a result of depression. These things are like dominos. . . One follows the other. Hard to know which came first the chicken or the egg. You must delve inside and figure out why you job hopped. Is it hard to work with others, or you did not like your work, or mentally you could just not function. Learning these things about ourself will help you hone in on being successfull in you next job. For example: If it is others you don't like being around choose a field or work where you can work alone. All that advice is only if you are stable with the depression. If the depression is not stable then you set yourself up for failure and more depression just like a boomerang. Employment services don't normally care much but you do need a good supportive voc rehab worker. If you are not getting the help there ask for a new one.
Reply:David - Depression can have many causes: mental (what you are thinking), emotional (too many blocked emotions) and physical (an inactive lifestyle). To work through your anger and depression you need to work on all levels.

MENTAL - According to Richard Carlson, author of "You Can Be Happy No Matter What," most people think happiness is conditional and outside of themselves or expect that it is a fleeting feeling based on the events in their lives or their circumstances. They don't realize that their happiness is inside of them IN THE MOMENT.

According to Carlson, most people are unhappy because most of their thinking is negative. Negative thinking IN THE MOMENT leads to a negative feeling IN THE MOMENT which leads to a negative mood. Then the negative mood leads to a negative feeling in the moment which leads to more negative thinking in the moment. It becomes a viscous circle.

The reverse is also true. Positive thinking in the moment leads to positive feelings in the moment which leads to a positive mood.

The trick is not to try to feel better or think positively, the trick is to think positive thoughts and to FEEL GOOD. When I feel down, I don't try to change what I'm thinking/feeling, I just DELIBERATELY start thinking positive thoughts about things I like..

When you start to think or feel negative, STOP THINKING ABOUT WHATEVER YOU ARE THINKING and DELIBERATELY start thinking about things that make you happy. You have to make a deliberate effort. I just say things to myself like "I like the song Forever Young by Rod Stewart, I like chocolate chip cookies, I like the movie "The Simpsons" By changing my focus I immediately change my feelings and then my thoughts automatically go back to positive. You might want to make a "Happy" list and carry it with you for those times when negative thoughts/feelings get the best of you.

EMOTIONAL - Every day we all feel many different emotions. Emotions are just ENERGIES IN MOTION in our bodies. Emotions are meant to be FELT and RELEASED. In America, we are taught that emotions are weak and so most people ignore or downplay their emotions.

Every time you don't allow yourself or you aren't allowed to fully experience an emotion, to feel it, and to move through it, the energy of that emotion becomes stopped and blocked in your body. It remains blocked until you go back and re-experience that emotion. Then the energetic block is freed and cleared. Virtually all of our physical ailments come from energetic blocks in our bodies, energetic patterns that are connected to our emotional patterns

When emotions are blocked for a long time, your body shuts down emotionally and you get numb (depressed). You feel tired and have no interest in anything. The emotions that are blocked also tend to LEAK out (like in angry outbursts).

One good way to release blocked emotions and anger is to use EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) or Emotional Tapping. In EFT you apply gentle acupressure tapping to specific body points to release blocked emotions. EFT is easy to learn (you can learn the basics in 15-30 minutes). You can use EFT anytime, anywhere for any emotional or physical issue. One basic round of EFT takes about one minute to complete. EFT works quickly and painlessly.

Please download the FREE EFT Instructional manual from the EFT website (www.emofree.com). Also, please watch the FREE introductory video.

PHYSICAL - If you are a person who doesn't exercise on a regular basis, your body gets "Stale" and you feel tired and lethargic. Taking a brisk 15 minute walk every day will do wonders to improve your mood. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood elevators into the bloodstream, which makes you feel GOOD. Exercise also helps to release stress (anger) so you won't feel depressed all the time.

One last thing, drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Your body is 70% water and water helps flush toxins out of your body. If you don't drink enough water your body cannot cleanse itself internally and you will feel lethargic and have no energy. Some depression is really just dehydration.

In terms of employment, my 19 year old son (who goes to college full-time) was recently employed in a security job. He attended a three day training class (for $75) and then got a $12/hour job. Since 9-11 Security is a growing job field. His job is steady but low pressure.

Good luck!
Reply:Maybe you should get on disability until you are better to work full time. Then once on that you can apply for VESSID, which might help you if you need further education. Also, Careers for ppl with disabilities might be of some help,,sorry i dont know the exact name or web-site,,,but if you do some research im sure you will find it.

good luck and hang in there!
Reply:Could you possibly work for yourself? Maybe you have some skill that someone is looking for.... even if its manual labor. That would let you set your own hours and deal with your emotional stuff as it comes up. At least you could think about starting your own business on weekends or something... if you did happen to get full time work.
Reply:Well I'm 32 and had a similar problem. The best I can recommend is working through a temp service. I started with a temp service and ended up full time within the first 90 days. Good luck!

How long is a DWI on a background check for employment?

How long will a DWI be a background check for employment? I heard 3 years is that true? Don't criticize about DWI's. If you drink, you have probably driven over the limit 0.08% at least once in your life. We all know what can happen, stick to the question.

How long is a DWI on a background check for employment?
I thought like 10 years...

or maybe I'm just thinking of the twice in 10 years thing..

but I really thought it stayed on there for 10 years.
Reply:I can honestly say, I don't have to worry about getting a DWI, but I do know that most employers require that information from all applicants, especially if the applicant is applying for a driving position. A DWI stays on your driving record as long as you hold a valid driving license, and any DWI you get in any state will be counted against you. If you have a CDL, I know in Florida, 2 strikes against you and you loose your CDL for life and if 3 DWI charges, you could possibly kiss your regular driving license goodby for almost life as well.

An employer looks at the background of an applicant very closely, especially if there is drinking/violence or any criminal history involved. It is best to be honest on your applications and resumes to the best of your knowledge. The background check tells the employer a lot about you, your habits and character, and if you have a good history with only 1 DWI against you, chances are that the employer will just set that charge aside until he/she interviews you for the position you're applying for, then ask about a posible drinking problem. I have filled out quite a few applications and put no to those questions and at most of my interviews the questions would still be asked; "Are you sure you have answered these questions truthfully?".If the employer hires you and then later find that you with-held that information, that is grounds for immediate termination.

A 3 year length for a background check is definitely false. The best advice that most people would tell you is, don't drink and drive. If you want to drink when you go out partying, arrange to have a designated driver, that way you not only protect your license, but you also protect your life and others as well not losing your job or having to be concerned about a background check because of a DWI charge. Be honest about yourself, value your life(you only have one) and good luck on your application. I hope you do well.
Reply:Honestly there is no time limit that can be defined as to how long DWI check would be done. As you have noticed there are certain companies whose employment form simply ask if you have ever been convicted, without specifying any time limit. Just like visa forms to most countries. I would say don't hide if you have ever been charged with DWI, hiding facts can result in bad consequences, whereas telling the truth from the beginning would not hurt for long.

Do you see your employment as a job that pays the bills, or a career that helps define who you are?

If you are career-minded, please also answer the following:

Are you a parent? If so, do you feel that your parenting responsibility carries a greater or lesser portion of your identity than you employment? How does this affect your priorities and performance at work?

Do you see your employment as a job that pays the bills, or a career that helps define who you are?
quite the impact this question.

thank you .

as my child (14 3/4yrs.) sees it ,to me work is most in definition of who or what i am. that brings another dilemma.

she's right and wrong.

as for how i perceive is still a discrepancy debating in it self what priorities are best in fact, most afective in overcomming this very question that may have evolved durring the coarse of no further action than being ,ON TIME!!!
Reply:right now my jobs are just to pay the bills while i'm attending college. i would love to begin my career, but i have to wait until i graduate. i did choose my degree according to how much time i would be able to spend with my family, so i think that my career would only be a supporting factor that makes up my identity.
Reply:It's both, my current employment is a job that pays the bills but is also experience for the career that I want.

I don't see how parent identity is related to work identity...it's apples and oranges. One is private and one is public.

There is some overlapping in the priority sense. Immediate family %26amp; health first, work next.
Reply:My career just pays the bills. I am doing what I have gone to college for but I am a free soul. I don't care what I do right now. I only want to keep building my own business so that I can live the life style of my choice instead of what my boss dicates through raises or lack of or only what the job pays.

I am a parent. My kid's deserve to learn the free enterprize system and learn to not be a slave to a job and attain what they want. In a job we shrink our activities and purchases to match our income. Business owners and the like raise the income to match their desires.
Reply:its to save up money so i can live on my own or with my boyfriend somewhere. its a way to pay for my car loan and college, but mostly to save as long as ican stand my parents, and then move out when the time is right.

Where can i find employment for those interested in going to a physician's assistant program?
You would need to either volunteer, or get a short certification like phlebotomy, CNA, EMT, etc. You could also work in admissions, but that would not be direct patient care, if they require that.

How do I indicate flexible hours of availability on an employment application?

The employment application I'm filling out (for a 24 hour place) asks for my hours of availability Monday through Sunday, from (blank) to (blank). How do I indicate that I'll work any time (provided that they let me sleep, of course)?

How do I indicate flexible hours of availability on an employment application?
write "open" on it, so they know you're flexible that whole day. Of course, they'd consider your sleep schedule, as they're probably used to it being a 24 hr place of employment.

If you want a really flexible schedule, consider doing a work at home job.

How can I get employment in the child care field before I complete my training?

I am pursuing a career in the child care field and I wanted to know how I could get employment before I start my training.

How can I get employment in the child care field before I complete my training?
Here are a few ideas

Headstart is always looking for volunteers...so I would try there first...be sure to tell them you are a child care education major and you may even give yourself an in once you have finished your schooling....they tend to hire and promote from within and depending how many units you have completed already they may even hire you as an aide...

2nd choice is try the local public preschools/daycare centers....I did some internship time at one and they were very helpful with lots of ideas and gave me access to all of there teacher idea books and most of the staff was very helpful in completing my college class work and very happy to have an extra set of hands to help out in the classes...

3rd....Try you own church ...they often have preschool or daycare programs during the weekdays and sunday school on sunday that help is always needed in

4th ....some private preschools also accept internships to assist in their programs but each of them has a different set of requirements and rules so you would have to check with them individually....

5th ...some community colleges and regular universitys also have preschool/daycare centers and they of course are always happy to have extra help...but you have to apply early in the semester or even before hand so be sure to check early on to be sure they have enough places for you to be in to get all of the time you will need....
Reply:You could probably do like an internship, where you don't make a typical salary, but are usually compensated in some way. Local community colleges usually have College fairs where you can actually talk to individuals in that field. A lot of places want someone to have some kind of experience before hiring them and by interning or even volunteering you gain experience and can express how much you desire to work in that field. Go to different child care facilities and ask if they are looking for helpers or interns.

Hope this helps %26amp; Good luck! =)
Reply:some center's will hire you as an aide
Reply:Apply to work at a preschool to work as an Teacher's Aide. There are preschools will hire you if you are still a student studying Early Childhood Education. Plus there is always your Practicum. Where you are place in a preschool for the experience. However Practicum a often not paid in cash and are them for experience only.

I am planning to take my G.R.E general exam. Can any one tell me the list of courses(like with arts flavor and even financial flavor) with good employment opportunities after I did my masters?

As for the arts, you could get a masters in any of the humanities or social sciences like history, english, sociology, anthropology. Then you can get a PhD and become a professor or some other academic position.

What is the best way to get into stunt and precision driving? How easy is it to find employment?

It is my dream to be a stunt driver. I love to drive, I love cars and I love learning about cars and other ways to become a defensive driver. I know there is Bob Bondurant's Racing School, but how easy is it to find employment afterwards? And where else can you go to learn. I mean, you can't have a few days of classes and be ready to work, can you? Does anyone know, or expirienced in this field?

What is the best way to get into stunt and precision driving? How easy is it to find employment?
Its actually hard to get into it. It's almost like they have a union. A stunt driving school would be a good way to go and they could probably tell you where to go from there. But to get a job, you need an in with someone. It's like performance driving school. It's the job everyone wants and its very protected by the people within.

This here is the best program I've seen.

http://www.precisiondriving.net/eliteses...

I want to do it someday. They actually teach you the ins and outs of the business. Don't bother with a performance driving school. I go to those once a year and no one cares. I've done 1 stunt in 1 movie since I've started my racing career. And I have several ins. Maybe I just suck though.

Anyway, check that guy out and good luck.
Reply:first, u have to find classes/schools in Hollywood

then if you are successful there, then people might pick u up
Reply:well the only thing i can think of where you can get employment would be hollywood, as a stuntman.

you should get a talent agent and tell the agent exactly what you want to do, and he/she should be able to help you from there.

What can I do about large gaps in my employment history?

I have a mental health issue that I've gotten treatment for and have a much better handle on now but I was unable to look for a job for months at a time up to a year. In the last seven years, I have about three and a half years of unemployment all told. Before that I was in and out of and back in college so that period had spotty employment as well. What can I do so I'm not wasting my time with employers who won't look twice at my resume?

What can I do about large gaps in my employment history?
Lie

Think of business that went out of business and put them on there. Or say you were working from home..aka... "freelance".

I know people say dont lie but everyone does it.

I know someone said school but honestly if you put that on there you may have to submit a transcript.
Reply:It's stupid to lie, and it's awkward not to in your case. You're the one who knows what the real issues are. Can you possibly decide to trust an employer-to-be to make their own judgment? Some of them are REAL human beings, you know, not just cold-blooded robots.
Reply:just tell them you were attending school or just werent in the market for a job at those times.
Reply:I do not much care for resumes. I found one on a company computer that belonged to a really lousy past secretary (who wouldn't stay on her meds) - Heck, I would have kept her on if I knew she was that good. I check past employers and I am very concerned when there are gaps in employment, but a person who lies about employment dates doesn't even have a chance. I prefer an honest person and would hear their story before jumping to conclusions. There is other employers out there that operate the same way.

I am a Sole Proprietor and recently created and Employment Identifictation Number, how do I pay taxes?

I'm New to the Game and would appreciate some advice:

I know that as a Sole Proprietor, I can add my business earnings to my personal earnings and report everything to IRS as individual income; however, if my business earnings are reported under my Employment Identification Number to IRS and my W2 earnings are reported under my Social Security Number, how do I formally report both as individual income to make sure that IRS is aware of the sources of funding?

Also, if I have Short Term Stock gains and Business Earnings how do I report both using the Estimated Capital Gains forms. Do I need separate forms for each SSN and EIN, or can I just add everything together and pay it under SSN?

I would greatly appreciate a knowledgeable answer here. No guesses please. I'll do my own research anyway..but wanted to get a head start. Thank You.

I am a Sole Proprietor and recently created and Employment Identifictation Number, how do I pay taxes?
If you have employees, and/or if you are selling something that would be subject to sales tax, make sure that you get hooked up into your state's tax system as well as the federal. Make sure you understand the taxes you are required to collect from your employees and customers, and taxes and fees that you owe the government. If you fail to file returns or collect the appropriate amounts you could end up owing a LOT in penalties.

Consulting a CPA might be wise, rather than trying to figure it all out yourself, if you are in these areas.
Reply:it's all broken down on your forms. you file a schedule c for your business expenses
Reply:First, your S.E. income will be reported on Schedule C. You will enter the Fed Emp. ID Number on that schedule in the box indicated. The W-2 is reported as always.

S-T gains will be reported on Schedule D. No separation is necessary unless they are different classification (Long-term vs short-term). Business gains and losses are reported on a different form, but will flow to Schedule D and then to your 1040. Good luck!
Reply:you have to file a schedule C
Reply:I am a Sole Proprieter also. I have been doing my taxes myself for the past several years. You can file all your income together on on form 1040. The great part is you don't even need an EIN. The IRS recognizes your SSN as the same thing as an EIN. If you are going to do your own taxes, I would strongly recommend considering Turbo Tax. I have used several different types of tax software and Turbo Tax has been the best by far. Their results are guaranteed. You don't even have to know anything about taxes, it has step by step instructions a child could follow. They have also gotten me back more money than any other software or CPA I used prior to their product. Hope this helps you and good luck with your business.

Why are some employment agency staff so horrid and snotty to job seekers?

Why are some employment agency staff so snotty and horrid and horrid to job seekers? As an unemployed person who has used a lot of these agencies, I have encountered some real nasty consultants - usually young women who ridiculously seem to think that just because you have a few months gap in your work history, there is something wrong with you. Most of them have also been utterly useless, just taking your name and never contacting you.

So why are these women so nasty with us unemployed? I would really like to know!

Why are some employment agency staff so horrid and snotty to job seekers?
I feel for you really I do. I am a hiring professional with a high tech company. I got my start in one of these agencies. Not all people working for these agencies are like this, but I have seen my share. This is only based on my opinion but maybe you can relate.

These agencies rely on hiring younger people and training them. The promise of a lot of money that doesn't require a BA or MA usually pulls people that don't know what they want to do with their lives.

I got into recruiting because I liked helping people and wanted to make a difference in people's lives. But I soon learned it has nothing to do with helping people. It's a business, and the pressures of getting your candidates hired is what pays your bills. For the agency, they have a lot of competition, and there are so many varibles that can go wrong before one of their candidates gets hired. So after having many of these submittals not get hired, the agency recruiters feel the pressure and get more aggressive. They have been burned many times because of ambiguity with a candidate's history, skillset match, or personality match with the client. They are always on the look out for this ambiguity. Any imperfection that might cause them not to get their commission, they will root it out quickly. Gaps in jobs, short stays on jobs, exageration on skill sets, a candidates communication skills on the phone, how the candidate presents himself/herself in person are all factors that increase or decrease the percentage of placing a candidate and getting their commission. So in their world they have lost sight of their customer and end up treating "you" the candidate as a commodity not as a person. You've become the product they are trying to sell.

The recruiters who are successful figure out over time that the candidate is also the customer. I had to. I got caught up in all that too, but what set me apart is rather than crucifying someone for gaps in their resume or short stays, is to coach them and treat them like professionals. I can't speak for why it seems all the women recruiters are nasty to you, (although I might have an idea, but can't talk about it here) you'll just need to try and find more respectable agencies that have a better reputation in the job community. Hope that helps.
Reply:Because they have a job and you dont which makes them feel superior, its probably the only area of their lives they can get to feel superior, as they are nasty individuals with no lives, dont fret it, just keep smiling, hopefully you will get a permanent job soon and these unhelpful folk will be a distant memory!
Reply:It isn't just the female agents its the male one as well.

Its because they are all inadequate little people who can't succeed in a real job requiring real expertise that they are so power mad - remember Hitler!

They are simply scared of getting it wrong as are their clients so any tiny blemish on your past is jumped upon as an excuse to say no. At which point you are no longer a potential earner for them and thus of no value in any sense.

Learn the lesson and give them reasons to employ you rather than not to. Gaps in employment can be explained in many ways with a little imagination from you. e.g. crossing the antarctic in a camper van! Just make sure its not checkable

Rise above these creeps and keep trying I've had to make hundreds of applications in the past and even ended up with a job I didn't apply for - while the agent was writing to me to turn me down another opportunity arose she put me in for and I got it
Reply:I found the young women were good its the old 1s that are snotty the fat 1s that have kidz
Reply:I went today to claim job seekers because I haven't been able to get any work. I hope I do soon. I went with out claiming for months because I don't like to do it. The women who interviewed me was very nice though and even looked up something to help me with what I would like to do when I can save up enough money, which is train to be a driving instructor.
Reply:Well said Ryder!
Reply:Well they are probably placing an individual like yourself in a high paying position when they are jealous and can't get one because one they didnt go to school or two they had kids when they were 14 or 16 hey its the truth!
