Why are some employment agency staff so horrid and snotty to job seekers?

Why are some employment agency staff so snotty and horrid and horrid to job seekers? As an unemployed person who has used a lot of these agencies, I have encountered some real nasty consultants - usually young women who ridiculously seem to think that just because you have a few months gap in your work history, there is something wrong with you. Most of them have also been utterly useless, just taking your name and never contacting you.

So why are these women so nasty with us unemployed? I would really like to know!

Why are some employment agency staff so horrid and snotty to job seekers?
I feel for you really I do. I am a hiring professional with a high tech company. I got my start in one of these agencies. Not all people working for these agencies are like this, but I have seen my share. This is only based on my opinion but maybe you can relate.

These agencies rely on hiring younger people and training them. The promise of a lot of money that doesn't require a BA or MA usually pulls people that don't know what they want to do with their lives.

I got into recruiting because I liked helping people and wanted to make a difference in people's lives. But I soon learned it has nothing to do with helping people. It's a business, and the pressures of getting your candidates hired is what pays your bills. For the agency, they have a lot of competition, and there are so many varibles that can go wrong before one of their candidates gets hired. So after having many of these submittals not get hired, the agency recruiters feel the pressure and get more aggressive. They have been burned many times because of ambiguity with a candidate's history, skillset match, or personality match with the client. They are always on the look out for this ambiguity. Any imperfection that might cause them not to get their commission, they will root it out quickly. Gaps in jobs, short stays on jobs, exageration on skill sets, a candidates communication skills on the phone, how the candidate presents himself/herself in person are all factors that increase or decrease the percentage of placing a candidate and getting their commission. So in their world they have lost sight of their customer and end up treating "you" the candidate as a commodity not as a person. You've become the product they are trying to sell.

The recruiters who are successful figure out over time that the candidate is also the customer. I had to. I got caught up in all that too, but what set me apart is rather than crucifying someone for gaps in their resume or short stays, is to coach them and treat them like professionals. I can't speak for why it seems all the women recruiters are nasty to you, (although I might have an idea, but can't talk about it here) you'll just need to try and find more respectable agencies that have a better reputation in the job community. Hope that helps.
Reply:Because they have a job and you dont which makes them feel superior, its probably the only area of their lives they can get to feel superior, as they are nasty individuals with no lives, dont fret it, just keep smiling, hopefully you will get a permanent job soon and these unhelpful folk will be a distant memory!
Reply:It isn't just the female agents its the male one as well.

Its because they are all inadequate little people who can't succeed in a real job requiring real expertise that they are so power mad - remember Hitler!

They are simply scared of getting it wrong as are their clients so any tiny blemish on your past is jumped upon as an excuse to say no. At which point you are no longer a potential earner for them and thus of no value in any sense.

Learn the lesson and give them reasons to employ you rather than not to. Gaps in employment can be explained in many ways with a little imagination from you. e.g. crossing the antarctic in a camper van! Just make sure its not checkable

Rise above these creeps and keep trying I've had to make hundreds of applications in the past and even ended up with a job I didn't apply for - while the agent was writing to me to turn me down another opportunity arose she put me in for and I got it
Reply:I found the young women were good its the old 1s that are snotty the fat 1s that have kidz
Reply:I went today to claim job seekers because I haven't been able to get any work. I hope I do soon. I went with out claiming for months because I don't like to do it. The women who interviewed me was very nice though and even looked up something to help me with what I would like to do when I can save up enough money, which is train to be a driving instructor.
Reply:Well said Ryder!
Reply:Well they are probably placing an individual like yourself in a high paying position when they are jealous and can't get one because one they didnt go to school or two they had kids when they were 14 or 16 hey its the truth!
