Is it legal to charge for verification of employment?

I live in Colorado and need to verify employment for a court case. Is it legal for an employer to charge me to verify if this person still works for them?

Is it legal to charge for verification of employment?
Sadly, yes it's legal, as a mortgage broker I deal with this all the time. Many employers now charge for that info, also many banks charge for verifications of deposit. It's such a rip off, but totally legal.
Reply:Yes, many employers now charge a processing fee for verifications. You can add the cost to the legal charges that you may recoup down the road depending on how the case is written and adjudicated.
Reply:I don't know if it is illegal but that is the strangest thing I have ever heard of. Most employers can access an electronic database that gives them basic employment information for anyone that has worked there in about 5 seconds. You should contact the Colorado department of labor and training and ask if that is even legal.
