What is the entry path to employment within the poilce Bomb squad?

Are there formal requirements?


Is it only possible if you're already an officer?


What would be a good way for someone who is interested to go about gaining employment within a bomb squad?

What is the entry path to employment within the poilce Bomb squad?
I know that a most require psych tests and a lie detector test as part of being employed with the department. One thing that is good is education, such as criminal justice, police science, etc. that is always helpful. You must first gain employment with the police department, and then go through their academy and graduate. Then possibly in time you would be able to maneuver to a position such as working with the Bomb Squad, given some time with in the department.





I would suggest that you call your nearest police department and speak with the HR department, they should be able to give you a plethora of information about all that it entails.

Reply:I know of about half a dozen agencies that have a bomb squad and all of them you have to be a police officer there first.
Reply:A lot of them are former EOD guys out of the military
Reply:Being in the Army Corps helps, but you do need to be an officer first. Depending on city or state your referring to, it could be as little as 6 months on the job, or like here in Chicago, 5+ years before you transfer over. Im sure you didnt get into the CoE without doing basic training or other work before doing this right? Same principle here. Work before advancement.





You dont get to be captain your second day on the job.
Reply:These guys got their experience for the military as ORDINANCE DISPOSAL technicians.
Reply:Like any specialized units within a police department, you have to be a sworn officer first and spend your time on patrol. The fact that you have military experience on EOD might help you in the long run, but you still have to fight your way up through the ranks. Most states don't recognize military certifications.
Reply:i would guess you would have to be apolice officer for a certain number of years before you can request a specialty program such as the "bomb squad" Do you think detectives become a detective right away of course not they started out as a rookie cop first.

Reply:Lots of getting in good with the higher-ups. You have to be chosen. It's as much politcal as it is merit-based.
Reply:Usually you have to get hired on as an officer somewhere with a bomb squad. Like any specialized unit you have to do your time in patrol and then put in for the Bomb Squad. They have a process for picking newbies. If you get picked you have to go off to school for a long time.
