How to find out whether an employment lawyer is really a good one or not?

I am thinking to have consultation(s) with some employment lawyer(s). I deeply wonder how to find out how capable a lawyer is. I assume everyone would say himself or herself is of great ability, especially when they want to take the case. So I would want some different sources to see a lawyer's capability, preferably even before I have the consultation for which most if not all charge fees. The consultation fee is not the problem, but finding out he or she is much incapable after spending the money is not that good of an option.

If any person who is either experienced or of legal training background, please provide your expertise suggestion.

Thank you very much for the advices.

You can look them up in the Martindale-Hubbell law directory (which is usually available at the library) which will give you an idea of their career path -- including how many published cases they were involved in.

You can call the state bar and/or Board of Professional Responsibility to see if any charges for ethics violations have been brought against them.

The best way to find a lawyer for a given practice area IMHO is to call other lawyers in the region who don't list that practice area, and see who they refer you to when they say "we don't handle that kind of matter." Usually they will give you the name of someone who does, and it's usually someone they've worked with in the past and respect as a fellow professional.
Reply:By asking for references
Reply:Every state has a bar association which not only documents a lawyers past work, but also any complaints lodged against the lawyer. So contact your state Bar Association and ask for information about whatever lawyer you are looking into. They should be more than happy to answer your questions.
