Why does the company I interviewed with need W-2 and 1099 to verify previous employment?

I interviewed with a company and was given a conditional offer. If everything in drug screening turned out ok, background checks came back ok, etc. I would start the 15th. Everything came back fine but now they are asking for my W-2's and 1099's from previous employers or me if I have on file to verify employment, why would they need these forms and how far legally can they go with them as far as checking on me.

They hired you in part because you claimed certain prior employment and certain prior salary level. Now it is time to prove these things, or to admit that you fibbed.
Reply:Haven't heard of that before. It may be their way of verifying how much you made at the last job.

Usually they will call your employer to verify unless you indicated that you did not want them to contact the employer. Many people will do this so that your current job doesn't find out you are looking for a new job.
Reply:they want to know how much money you stated. maybe they think you are getting more money.
